POSITION SUMMARY: The Physical Therapist is accountable for assessing, planning, directing, and implementing physical therapy treatments as prescribed by a licensed medical professional. This role involves administering therapeutic modalities and physical agents to aid in the restoration of function and prevention of disability following injury, illness, or physical impairment. The therapist works closely with patients to help them achieve their highest level of performance and adapt to their capabilities. Additionally, the therapist oversees and guides the activities of support staff, including Physical Therapy Assistants (PTA). This position also entails participating in departmental operations, maintaining quality improvement initiatives, and contributing to continuous quality improvement (CQI) efforts. The therapist plays a role in budget formulation, evaluates departmental performance against budgetary constraints, and ensures timely and accurate patient documentation. Participation in infection control, equipment training, safety, and fire safety programs is also required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Directs the activities of certified staff within the Physical Therapy department, including Physical Therapy Assistants.
  2. Observes and evaluates treatment outcomes, making recommendations to the referring physician as necessary.
  3. Conducts comprehensive assessments on all patients relevant to the therapy provided, including pediatric, adolescent, geriatric, and general populations, and performs reassessments in accordance with established policies.
  4. Develops educational plans based on identified learning needs and evaluates the effectiveness of the instruction, involving family members as appropriate.
  5. Demonstrates proficiency in various physical therapy modalities.
  6. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity, addressing psychosocial needs as they arise.
  7. Ensures safe and proper operation of equipment while maintaining cleanliness and safety standards within the department.
  8. Engages professionally with patients and families, involving them in the care planning process.
  9. Communicates effectively with physicians, facility staff, and administrative teams.
  10. Coordinates patient care to meet individual needs while adhering to facility policies.
  11. Keeps accurate records related to personnel and departmental operations.
  12. Exhibits flexibility, organization, and the ability to function under pressure.
  13. Maintains positive working relationships within the department and with other departments.
  14. Collaborates with other departments as necessary to enhance patient care and performance improvement initiatives.
  15. Ensures documentation meets current standards and policies.
  16. Participates in staff education and performance improvement training, assisting with orientation and in-service training for certified staff members.
  17. Conducts evaluations of certified staff, including interviewing, hiring, assessing performance, and termination processes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree in Physical Therapy.

LICENSE: Must possess a valid Missouri license from the Board of Healing Arts.

CREDENTIALS: Graduate from an accredited Physical Therapy program.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of one year of clinical experience is preferred.

SPECIAL SKILLS:

PATIENT INTERACTION: Ability to establish rapport with patients of all ages. Basic understanding of physical medicine, therapy modalities, anatomy, and physiology. Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of physical therapy equipment.

TECHNICAL SKILLS: Basic computer proficiency.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

STANDING: Ability to stand for extended periods.

WALKING: Must be able to move throughout various areas during the workday.

LIFTING: Capability to assist in lifting patients of varying sizes.

SITTING/DRIVING: Must have access to a safe vehicle for extended periods.

VISUAL: Vision must be correctable to 20/20.

HEARING: Hearing must be within normal limits.

SPEAKING: Ability to conduct public speaking engagements and in-service training for physicians, patients, and colleagues, and to communicate effectively with hospital staff.
