Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Machinist to join our team at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. As a Machinist, you will be responsible for performing skilled manual work in connection with the operation of precision machine tools used in fabricating metal parts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate precision machine tools to fabricate metal parts, and install, repair, and maintain mechanical equipment.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate precision machine tools, including lathes, planers, milling machines, shapers, drill presses, grinders, and other standard metal working machines.
  • Perform various bench, machine, or hand tool operations required in the fabrication, installation, and repair of metal parts, including welding, pressing, cutting, forming, shaping, lapping, boring, turning, bending, finishing, and fitting.
  • Install, tear down, inspect, repair, replace parts, reassemble, adjust, and maintain all classes of machinery and machine parts.
  • Conduct work in a safe manner and in accordance with established safety rules and practices.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and completion of an approved apprentice training program in machining, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Considerable knowledge of the machining and welding properties of metals, principles, practices, tools, and equipment of the machinist trade, and occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Ability to work from sketches and broken parts, and to do oxyacetylene and electric arc welding.

Working Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors. May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.
