Principal Engineer: Water and Wastewater Treatment

The City of Durham's Department of Water Management is seeking a highly skilled Principal Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our Utility Engineering Division, you will be responsible for managing water and wastewater treatment projects, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and providing excellent customer service.
Key Responsibilities:- Manage water and wastewater treatment projects from inception to completion, including scope and budget development, procurement, contract administration, and project close-out.
- Prepare and review engineering request for proposals/qualifications, contracts, agreements, reports, studies, presentations, plans, specifications, bids, and other documentation.
- Develop and administer contracts, project scope, budgets, and schedules, and provide technical expertise and consultation to City departments and external agencies.
- Oversee data collection and analysis, maintain records, logs, and databases, and track post-implementation project progress and requirements.
- Design, implement, and evaluate special projects, and manage projects, programs, and assigned department operations.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or a directly related field.
- A minimum of five years of engineering experience in the water/wastewater industry or a closely related field.
- A North Carolina Professional Engineer Registration or equivalent as determined by the City (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire).
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License; if out-of-state, must obtain a NC license within 60 days of hire.
- 2 or more years of experience managing public bids for water/wastewater capital projects either in the private or public sector.
- Knowledge of methods used in design and operation of water/wastewater treatment plants and/or dams.
- Knowledge of applicable laws and regulatory codes relevant to design, permitting, and operation of water/wastewater treatment plants and/or dams.
