As a deputy attorney general, your responsibilities will encompass:

  • Managing all facets of intricate civil employment litigation, which includes drafting and presenting motions, interviewing witnesses, conducting depositions, and preparing for trial.
  • Overseeing jury and bench trials.
  • Conducting contested administrative hearings before the State Personnel Board.
  • Defending agency actions against petitions for writs of mandamus.
  • Drafting appellate briefs and representing cases before the Courts of Appeal and Ninth Circuit.
  • Securing work safety and gun violence restraining orders.
  • Communicating effectively with clients, providing comprehensive case analyses and strategic recommendations.
  • Offering training and guidance to state agencies on various employment and personnel issues.
  • Engaging with judges, court personnel, juries, and witnesses in a professional manner.
  • Collaborating effectively with colleagues and opposing counsel.

All candidates must be residents of California and active members in good standing of the California State Bar.

ELS deputies have the flexibility to choose between teleworking or working in the office, depending on their preferences. While there are occasions that necessitate in-office attendance for meetings or court appearances, deputies are encouraged to telework when possible. However, they should be prepared to report to the office when urgent matters arise and remain accessible during standard business hours.

  • A fingerprint background check will be mandatory.
  • Candidates must be active members of the California State Bar.
