Smithers Environmental Risk Sciences division is looking for a Junior Chemist in the Chemistry Department.

This position is anticipated to execute a variety of complex and challenging tasks with a degree of independence. The individual will be responsible for identifying and reporting issues in standardized procedures arising from instrumental, sample, or testing system failures. The role involves operating and potentially maintaining, under supervision, moderately complex testing equipment and apparatus.
Additionally, the candidate may provide insights for initial data interpretation and ensure that test systems meet expected standards. The role includes recording, compiling, and processing laboratory data in real-time for assigned tasks, and may involve report generation.

A. Key Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to remain standing for extended periods.
  • Capable of lifting weights up to 40-60 lbs.
  • Able to work in a freezer environment (-25°C) for durations of up to 1 hour.
  • Work autonomously with minimal oversight.
  • Proficient in using balances, meters, pumps, rotary evaporators, centrifuges, ovens, stir plates, and other standard analytical instruments.
  • Must be able to access both low and high storage areas.
  • Responsible for cleaning laboratory glassware.
  • Experience working with environmental samples such as soils, plant materials, animal tissues, and water and sediment from ponds.
  • Maintain organized records.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Marginal Functions:

  • Travel to external facilities for sample collection or processing.
  • Data entry tasks on a computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 100 lbs.
  • Capable of using a respirator.
  • Occasionally work beyond an 8-hour shift.

B. Chemical Safety

  • Must understand the potential hazards associated with chemicals in use and adhere to safety protocols as outlined in the Safety Manual and/or by Management.

C. Laboratory Safety

  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment including gloves, lab coats, eye protection, sleeves, hearing protection, pesticide suits, plastic booties, dust masks, respirators, and face masks.
  • Must be knowledgeable of and comply with laboratory safety standards.

Job Specifications

A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related field is required, along with 6 months of laboratory experience. Alternatively, 4-5 years of relevant experience in a laboratory setting may be considered in lieu of a degree.
