Job SummaryWe are seeking a highly skilled Naval Architect to join our team at General Dynamics - Bath Iron Works. As a Senior/Principal Naval Architect, you will be responsible for designing, building, documenting, and supporting Naval Ships.
Key Responsibilities- Design maintenance and upgrade tasks for ships under construction or in service.
- Documentation of "as-built" ships.
- Calculations to support new construction processes such as launching, dry dockings, sea trials, pier-side trim and stability monitoring, mooring arrangements and inclining.
- Prepare and submit Tonnage Applications to the US Coast Guard.
- Engineering analyses to determine and develop ship geometry, arrangements, weight, centers of gravity, loads, tank properties, cargo and payload stowage, docking parameters, and ship intact and damaged stability characteristics.
- Provide Naval Architecture support for BIW's Planning Yard contracts, including:
- Updating Selected Record Drawings (Docking and Sounding Tables, Ship Information Books and Principal Characteristics).
- Inclining Experiments (draft reading, liquid load survey, report creation, calcs, etc.).
- Special Projects and Studies.
- Updating Weight & Stability documentation.
- Respond to questions / provide guidance to the Fleet, Homeports and NAVSEA.
- Utilize Hydrostatic, Hydrodynamic, and "in-house" software to perform analyses.
- Write reports and correspondence.
- Participate in or lead technical interchanges on issues with customers such as U. S. Navy (NAVSEA and Supervisor of Shipbuilding), USCG, or others.
- Travel to US Navy Homeports 2-4 times per year for a week – 10 days per trip.
- Bachelor Degree in Naval Architecture required.
- Master's degree preferred.
- Sr. Level - 5 years, or more, of relevant experience required.
- Principal Level - 10 years, or more, of relevant experience required.
- Thorough knowledge of engineering tools and methods relating to Naval Architecture.
- Proficiency with computers and various Naval Architectural software packages such as: SHIPFLOW, Rhino3D & RhinoMarine, GHS, NAVCAD, SHCP, GHS, SMP, and RSDE (or other ship design synthesis tools); and the Microsoft Office Suite of tools.
- Strong oral and written communication skills required.
- Willingness to work onboard ship (pier side or at sea), in tanks, or in all sorts of weather - but primarily in an office environment.
- This position requires you to be able to obtain a government security clearance. You must be a US Citizen for consideration and you must be able to obtain an interim security clearance within the first 45 days of hire.
