This role involves working collaboratively with radiologists to conduct advanced diagnostic ultrasound examinations, adhering to established safety protocols and procedures. The incumbent will also serve as a clinical mentor for junior staff and students.

Educational Requirements

Mandatory - Completion of a CAHEA accredited formal training program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.


Experience Requirements

Mandatory - None.

Preferred - 2 years of experience as a Sonographer.


Certification Requirements

Mandatory - Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) or registry eligible (must obtain within 1 year of employment).

Advanced certification in relevant specialty areas as per facility requirements.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Proficient computer skills and dexterity for data entry and patient information retrieval.
  • Familiarity with Windows-style applications and keyboard operations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, capable of presenting information clearly and professionally to various stakeholders in the patient care continuum.
  • Understanding of abdominal anatomy and pathology to provide preliminary assessments to radiologists.

Key Responsibilities

  • Confirm physician orders and procedures for accuracy.
  • Utilize radiology information systems to enhance patient care.
  • Communicate procedures to patients to ensure comprehension.
  • Independently operate ultrasound equipment to perform imaging procedures in accordance with established protocols.
  • Review patient images prior to submission to ensure they meet diagnostic quality standards.
  • Conduct timely quality control procedures in line with regulatory standards and address any necessary notifications or remediation.
  • Assist in departmental operations, including inventory management, staff scheduling, and equipment upkeep.
  • Adapt communication and behavior to suit the specific needs of diverse patient populations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

This position requires the following physical capabilities: frequently exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force to move objects; occasionally exerting up to 100 pounds of force. Utilization of mechanical lifting devices or team lifts is encouraged. Flexibility in scheduling is required (e.g., 24/7 availability, weekends, holidays, on-call).

Routine duties may involve exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissues.

The role is performed in a patient care environment, which may involve direct interaction with patients and handling specimens that could contain communicable diseases, presenting an occupational risk for exposure.
