About the Surgical ICU

The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) is a specialized 24-bed unit dedicated to the critical care of adult patients undergoing various surgical procedures.

Supported Surgical Services Include:

  • Emergency Surgical Procedures

  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Surgery

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS)

Orientation and Training

  • Customized orientation based on individual skill levels and prior experience.

General Responsibilities

  • This role is essential for nurses at UMMC with over 12 months of experience, requiring competence in necessary skills and active participation in unit governance.
  • Independently provide and coordinate patient care within a clinical specialty.
  • Actively contribute as a member of the multidisciplinary patient care team.
  • Demonstrate and uphold the full spectrum of nursing professional practice, focusing on improving patient outcomes and satisfaction.
  • Accountable for care processes and outcomes during patient interactions.
  • Responsible for advancing group practice standards within the unit and reporting to the nurse manager on overall performance.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Successful completion of probationary evaluation and current on all mandatory training.
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Maryland or eligibility under Compact state agreements.
  • Commitment to ongoing education with a minimum of 10 contact hours per year.
  • Membership in a professional nursing organization.
  • Recent relevant clinical experience in a similar setting.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven leadership abilities, such as experience as a charge nurse or preceptor.
  • Proficient in utilizing computer systems for managing patient information.
  • Ability to provide care tailored to the specific needs of diverse patient populations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
