Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant is a vital member of our healthcare team, providing indirect and direct patient care within the scope of practice and in alignment with our standards of excellence and quality.
Key Responsibilities- Under the direction of the provider, contribute to the completion of patients' chief complaints, including vital signs, temperature, and other necessary information.
- Document patient/family needs and participate in planning and implementing care for patients.
- Administer ordered medications (oral, injection, topically, etc.) within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines.
- Identify significant changes in patient condition through data collection and report them to the provider.
- Troubleshoot issues and escalate problems to the provider, direct supervisor, or appropriate internal resource.
- Maintain clinical and administrative skills per the departmental competency guidelines to meet patient care and daily operational needs.
- Prepare patients for the physician and maintain a safe and supportive environment by keeping the work area, exam rooms, and equipment in clean, orderly, and safe manner.
- Assist with virtual health visits, including setting up the visit, pre-charting, contacting the patient, and troubleshooting issues.
- Document in electronic medical records (EMR) accurately and appropriately.
- Manage in-basket messages in the electronic health record (EHR) under the provider's verbatim instructions.
- Perform front desk workflows, including My Chart requests, patient registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, and check-in/check-out.
- Follow up on orders, appointments, referrals, and follow-up visits and collect co-pays as needed.
- Medical Assisting certification from one of the following: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA), or National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA).
- BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH).
- High School/GED (required).
- Enrollment in an approved Medical Assistant program (required within 30 days employment).
