POSITION OVERVIEW:

Under the guidance of the Swim Director or designated personnel, the Aquatic Safety Officer is tasked with ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and operational efficiency of the swimming facility during its open hours. The primary responsibility of this role is to protect the health and safety of all patrons, including members and guests, while enforcing established safety protocols and guidelines.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Arrive at work in uniform at least ten minutes before the scheduled shift to receive necessary instructions from the supervisor or preceding lifeguard.
  • Participate in regular in-service training sessions.
  • Ensure the safety of all swimmers during the shift and uphold all pool regulations.
  • Conduct chemical assessments of pool conditions in accordance with health codes and make adjustments as needed.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the pool area and equipment, reporting any required repairs or adjustments to the supervisor. Perform repairs as qualified.
  • Prepare the service area with required equipment and ensure all equipment is returned to its designated storage after use.
  • Engage with, orient, and assist all participants when not actively monitoring.
  • Focus on delivering quality experiences and fostering engagement within programs and activities.
  • Exhibit a professional demeanor and maintain a safe and clean environment at all times.
  • Work effectively with a diverse population, encompassing all ages, genders, and backgrounds.
  • Attend and actively participate in all assigned meetings.
  • Embody the four core values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility, while adhering to the YCM Code of Conduct.
  • Communicate the mission and objectives of the Y to the community.
  • Assist in various other areas as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:

The Aquatic Safety Officer must meet the qualifications established by the Y in Central Maryland. Candidates should possess good character and reputation, be capable of fulfilling assigned duties, accept training and supervision, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing as relevant to the role. Minimum qualifications include:
  • Current lifeguard certification.
  • Current CPR/AED/O2/First Aid certification (or O2 certification within 30 days of hire).
  • Successful completion of the Y in Central Maryland swim assessment.
  • Flexible availability, including days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Completion of new associate training (including Child Abuse Prevention) prior to commencing work.
