Job Summary

As a Sterile Processing Specialist at CAMC Health System, you will play a critical role in ensuring the effective processing, sterilization, and distribution of medical supplies, instruments, and equipment. Your primary responsibility will be infection prevention and control, requiring a foundational understanding of microbiology principles, personal protective equipment use, and attention to detail.

Responsibilities
  • Organize and coordinate functions and activities in the Central Service Department to ensure efficient processing, sterilization, and distribution of medical supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of sterile technique principles and perform high-level disinfection using approved chemical products.
  • Operate and monitor steam autoclaves, washers, Sterrad machines, automatic scope reprocessors, cart washers, and ultrasonic washers.
  • Perform daily biological monitoring for all equipment in Central Sterilization and Procedural areas.
  • Identify, clean, and sterilize medical instruments according to manufacturer instructions, and package and assemble instrument sets.
  • Responsible for waste disposal and decontamination of contaminated items.
  • Inspect equipment and instruments throughout procedural steps for condition and operation.
  • Assist with cost containment and quality assurance for the department.
  • Pursue opportunities for professional and personal growth, attending in-services and staff meetings, and maintaining knowledge of current trends and technology.
  • Promote professional growth of peers by sharing knowledge and directing them to appropriate sources of information.
  • Ensure accurate patient charges and credits are issued and processed immediately.
  • Responsible for batching patient charges, issues, and credits, and compiling and forwarding this information to inventory control and data management.
  • Support all hospital departments with sterilization needs.
  • Complete required reports and studies in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Responsible for inventory management and control of outdates.
  • Inspect equipment and supplies processed within the department, arranging for maintenance as necessary, to ensure safe and proper operating condition.
  • Assist the manager in ensuring Health Care Organizations (accrediting body) requirements for the department are met.
  • Able to pull case carts as appropriate.
  • Collect soiled instruments and equipment throughout the hospital for processing.
  • Maintain clean work surfaces at all times in decontamination and on all work stations as required.
  • Identify and report any defective instrumentation/equipment using the appropriate chain of command.
  • Organize, check for function, and assemble all instrument sets/trays using appropriate count sheets or other documentation for monitoring quality.
  • Follow through with requests for patient care equipment from other facilities and maintain a log of instruments and equipment on loan and return date.
  • Assist in development of goals and objectives for the department with guidance from Leadership Team.
  • Contribute to orientation and in-service training of Sterile Processing personnel.
  • Participate in the department's Quality Assurance Program by collecting data with assistance.
  • Serve as a member on various committees.
  • Report equipment breakdown and notify appropriate agency for a repair solution.
  • Prioritize processing of instrumentation needs based on operating room schedule.
  • Promote professional growth of peers by sharing knowledge and directing them to appropriate sources of information.
  • Assist with the annual budget with assistance from the Leadership Team.
  • Continuously update knowledge of practice and share with co-workers by presenting an educational offering.
  • Facilitate count sheet updates and/or creation of count sheets for new sets.
  • Facilitate instrument repair/replacement and related ordering functions.
  • Display the ability to trouble-shoot malfunctioning equipment when issues arise.
  • Complete quarterly QI reports. Ensure daily and weekly quality controls are complete.
  • Mentor all Sterile Processing Techs.
  • Coordinate and maintain Top 5 Board Project with little assistance from the Leadership Team.
  • Assist department leadership in education of employees and monitoring their competency.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of surgical specialties pertinent to the current working environment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department's identified patient ages. Specifically, the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients.

  • Perform work in alignment with the overall mission and strategic plan of the organization.
  • Follow organizational and departmental policies and procedures, as applicable.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Education

High School Diploma or GED (Required)

Experience: 2 years in Sterile Processing.
