Job Title: Automotive Mechanic

Are you a skilled mechanic looking for a challenging and rewarding role? We are seeking an experienced Automotive Mechanic to join our team at the City of Columbus.

Job Summary:

We are looking for a highly skilled Automotive Mechanic to perform a variety of tasks, including major and minor repair and replacement work, installation of rings and bearings, and diagnosis and repair of brakes and other vehicle systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform skilled mechanical repair work on diversified fleet of trucks, automobiles, and heavy/light equipment
  • Diagnose, repair, and replace brakes to include air brakes, anti-lock brake systems, and brake components
  • Perform diversified electrical work on automotive equipment, including installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights, and replacing alternators and generators
  • Make road tests to locate defects in operation and as a check on repair work before the return of equipment to active use
  • Use a variety of common testing devices, including ammeters, voltmeters, diagnostic scanners, measuring instruments, computers, gauges of various sorts, and other testing equipment
  • Repair and replace hydraulic systems in fire apparatus, packer trucks, and earth and snow moving equipment
  • Repair and replace both gas and diesel engines
  • Make drivability diagnostics and tests as needed using various scan tools
  • Perform diagnostic tests on air conditioning units and make repairs
  • Make diagnoses and repairs on various types of light equipment, including push mowers, wood chippers, weed eaters, sprayers, or generators
  • Perform welding and machine work incidental to completion of repair assignments and special projects
  • Maintain performance and stock records
  • Drive commercial motor vehicles which require a commercial drivers license
  • May change, mount, dismount, or balance tires on automotive equipment
  • May perform preventative maintenance and complete minor repairs on stationary and portable power generators

Requirements:

  • One (1) year of experience as a fully-skilled automotive mechanic or two (2) years as an Automotive Mechanic Helper with the City of Columbus
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operators license
  • By completion of the probationary period, must possess a valid Class A commercial motor vehicle operators license allowing the operation of vehicles with air brakes
  • By completion of the probationary period, must possess an EPA approved refrigerant certificate, which meets the standards under section 609 of the Clean Air Act for all technicians who may service a motor vehicle air conditioning system (MVAC & MVAC-like)
