Job Summary
The Perfusionist shall, under the general supervision and at the direction of the attending physician, cardiovascular-thoracic surgeon, member of the medical staff, and Chief Perfusionist, be responsible for the operation of the heart-lung machine, intra-aortic balloon, cell saver, Gem 6 Analyzer, and Hemotech ACT, Hepcon Heparin Management system, blood gas analyzer, coagulation management devices, ventricular assist devices, Intra-operative blood component separation devices, etc.
Key Responsibilities
- Confers with surgeons regarding the nature of the procedure to be performed and gather necessary information about the patient to be used in conjunction with the operation of the heart-lung machine.
- Independently operates heart-lung machine during the surgical procedure performing necessary functions to maintain patient's condition.
- Monitors a variety of physiologic parameters during surgical procedures.
- Responsible for maintaining familiarity with physiologic monitoring and recording other procedures so he/she can perform these as directed.
- Maintains accurate records of each perfusion as a permanent copy of the medical record.
- Follows the laboratory's procedure for handling specimens, processing, test analyses, and reporting results; maintains quality control records for blood gas, hematocrit, and electrolyte analyzer on a daily basis all point of care testing in the department; documents all corrective actions associated with quality control testing; maintains records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are tested and reported to an external source.
- Responsible for the administration of blood under the direction of the patient's attending physician.
- Administers IV fluids as well as such drugs Vasopressor, Vasodilators, Anti-coagulants and other drugs ordered by the physician in conjunction with the operation of the heart-lung machine.
- Manages & assists with insertion of Intra-aortic balloon pumps.
- Manages & assists with cardio-pulmonary support devices ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation).
- Manages & assists with insertion of ventricular assist devices (Abiomed) etc.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree - Bachelor's of Science Degree or related field
- Clinical Perfusionist (ABCP)
Work Environment
This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.
