Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and bilingual Youth Services Library Associate to join our team at the McHenry Public Library District. As a key member of our Youth Services team, you will play a vital role in supporting the library's mission by providing exceptional service to our Hispanic community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist patrons in person, by phone, or via email with reference questions and basic reader's advisory services.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of library technology, including catalogs, eReaders, tablets, and online resources.
  • Plan and implement programs that cater to the needs and interests of youth, teens, and caregivers, including story times, summer reading programs, book clubs, and family events.
  • Assist in selecting and maintaining materials for the youth and teen collections.
  • Stay up-to-date with current and popular youth and teen literature and other media.
  • Participate in professional development and networking activities to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Ensure all policies and procedures are followed.
Bilingual Services
  • Perform all duties in Spanish, including reading, writing, and conversing with patrons.
  • Design and implement culturally relevant programs and events for the Hispanic community.
  • Translate youth materials for programs, services, and collections.
  • Perform community needs assessments to identify the Hispanic community's needs and create tailored services and programs.
  • Provide school services to Spanish language and ESL classes under the guidance of the School Services Librarian.
Requirements
  • Associate's degree or equivalent coursework and previous library experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient technology skills, including Microsoft Windows and Office applications, Google Suite, and online video conferencing platforms.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of popular materials for youth and teens.
  • Understanding of the recreational and educational needs of today's youth and teens.
  • Ability to complete detailed work accurately, efficiently, and on time with minimal supervision.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish) are required.
Working Conditions

The employee will work in a fast-paced library environment, interacting with patrons, staff, and community members. The position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
