Overview:

The Correctional Managed Care program is dedicated to meeting the healthcare needs of underserved populations within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.

Role Summary:

The Clinical Staff Pharmacist is accountable for ensuring the safe, effective, and timely delivery of medication therapy. This includes conducting thorough drug utilization reviews and collaborating with a multidisciplinary healthcare team. The pharmacist will oversee pharmacy technicians, learners, and support staff in the preparation, labeling, and distribution of medications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate medication orders to confirm appropriateness based on patient-specific factors such as diagnosis, weight, concurrent medications, allergies, and age.
  • Prepare and dispense medications according to prescriptions in compliance with relevant laws and departmental protocols.
  • Identify, prevent, and report Adverse Drug Events as necessary.
  • Utilize clinical judgment to assess medication interactions and contraindications, providing recommendations to prescribers to enhance treatment safety and efficacy.
  • Maintain comprehensive patient medication records and develop individualized care plans.
  • Offer medication counseling to patients, ensuring clarity on treatment objectives, duration, special usage instructions, storage, and potential side effects.
  • Provide drug information and support to healthcare team members.
  • Administer and recommend vaccinations as appropriate.
  • Engage in quality assurance initiatives within the pharmacy department.
  • Supervise support personnel and uphold departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the training and development of pharmacy staff.
  • Act as a mentor and advisor for pharmacy learners.
  • Participate in ongoing professional education in line with departmental standards.
  • Communicate effectively with pharmacy staff, healthcare professionals, and patients.
  • Maintain an organized and sanitary work environment.
  • Adhere to regulations and internal controls to prevent drug diversion and ensure compliance with pharmacy operations.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Vision capabilities including close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Capacity to work independently and manage time efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical ability to lift and move items weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Strong problem-solving and prioritization skills.

Work Environment:

  • Standard pharmacy setting with potential weekend and shift rotation requirements.
  • May involve after-hours work and on-call responsibilities.
  • Exposure to various occupational hazards, including communicable diseases and hazardous materials.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
  • Active pharmacy license in Texas or eligibility for licensure.
  • Immunization Certification to be obtained within six months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years of relevant experience.
  • Completion of PGY1 or PGY2 residency training.
