We are seeking a highly skilled Histotechnician to join our team at Advocate Health. As a Histotechnician, you will play a critical role in ensuring the quality and accuracy of histology specimens.
Key Responsibilities- Accurately accession, label, and prepare specimens for testing
- Cut high-quality tissue sections with precise thickness and place them on glass slides
- Embed tissue into paraffin blocks and maintain a well-organized filing system
- Process tissue using processors to ensure optimal preservation and infiltration
- Perform routine and special stains, immunohistochemistry, cover slipping, verification, and distribution of slides
- Manage daily workflow for recuts, special stains, immunohistochemistry, control slides, and send-outs according to established protocols
- Evaluate quality control results and take corrective action under the guidance of key operators, technical specialists, or supervisor
- Perform and document cleaning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of instruments and equipment
- Assist pathologists during frozen section procedures
- Ensure compliance with all accrediting agency standards
- Advanced training beyond high school in a science-related field
- Proficient computer skills
- Knowledge of human anatomy
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and communication skills
- Able to safely handle sharp instruments
- Sits and stands for extended periods, with frequent walking, lifting, and bending
- May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, radioactive, and infectious agents
- Will be exposed to human blood, body fluids, and tissue
- Must wear appropriate lab coat, gloves, gowns, and eye and face protection as needed
