Position Overview

Job Title: Chinese Tutor/Assistant

Classification: Student Employee (non-exempt)

Supervisor: Director of the Chinese program

Compensation: Standard Hourly Rate

Position Purpose:
To provide assistance to faculty in the Asian Studies department, primarily focusing on the Chinese language. Responsibilities may include:
  • Supporting faculty in their teaching endeavors.
  • Contributing to faculty research and service activities.

Key Skills:
  • Effective communication skills in both English and Mandarin (spoken and written).
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational abilities.
  • Reliability and punctuality.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborating with faculty members in the Chinese program.
  • Preparing and facilitating tutoring sessions for students enrolled in Chinese courses.
  • Assisting faculty in reviewing assignments and grading assessments.
  • Supporting faculty in organizing Chinese-related events and activities.
  • Helping faculty prepare course materials and complete assigned projects.

Qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates majoring in Chinese or Asian Studies, as well as those with native or near-native proficiency in Mandarin. Minimum qualifications include:
  • Completion of Chinese 232 with a grade of A- or higher, or native language proficiency.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proficiency in Mandarin.
  • Punctuality in providing feedback and attending meetings.
  • Passion for promoting and teaching Chinese language and culture.
