Position: Substance Abuse Counselor

Job Type: Full-time HYBRID; 3 days in office, 2 days remote

As a Substance Abuse Counselor, you will manage all facets of a client's treatment journey. Your role will involve ensuring the coordination and continuity of care from the point of admission through to discharge and follow-up. You will enhance service delivery and performance improvement by offering thorough psychological therapy aimed at addressing the underlying causes and consequences of addiction, which includes providing substance abuse counseling for designated clients, as well as family and group therapy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the clinical team in decision-making processes regarding clients, including participation in all clinical meetings.
  • Evaluate the counseling requirements of the client.
  • Conduct assessments for substance abuse diagnoses using DSM criteria to determine the appropriate level of care based on ASAM criteria.
  • Gather relevant previous records pertinent to the current treatment episode.
  • Draft the substance abuse counseling component of the client treatment plan.
  • Deliver substance abuse counseling services as outlined in the client treatment plan.
  • Formulate the client discharge and continuum of care plan to facilitate transitions to suitable levels of care.
  • Actively participate as a member of a multidisciplinary team for assigned clients.
  • Document all counseling and educational services, assessments, reassessments, referrals, and follow-ups in the client's clinical record.
  • Maintain a caseload of clients, including all case management and utilization review updates, treatment planning responsibilities, and clinical documentation as required.
  • Coordinate support services for clients and their families, documenting the services provided in the clinical record.
  • Reassess clients and modify the substance use counseling section of the client treatment plan as necessary.
  • Facilitate family therapy sessions as assigned.
  • Engage with referral sources (e.g., legal, educational, employment) for coordination.
  • Address crisis-oriented issues through intervention utilizing a multidisciplinary team approach for assigned clients.
  • Perform administrative and clinical tasks as requested.
  • Attend team meetings and complete all required training courses in a timely manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in psychology, counseling, or social work from an accredited institution, as required by state regulations.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in substance use, mental health, or a related field.
  • Licensure or certification in counseling, as mandated by state regulations.
  • Counselors must hold credentials recognized by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA).

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
  • Licensed Clinical Addiction Counselor (LCAC)
  • Psychologist

  • Advanced Practice Nurse or Certified Nursing Specialist (APRN)
  • Credentials in addictions counseling from a nationally recognized credentialing body.
