POSITION OVERVIEW: The ICU Patient Care Technician plays a vital role in delivering compassionate and comprehensive care to patients in the Intensive Care Unit. This role involves both direct and indirect support to patients, ensuring their personal, physical, and comfort needs are met under the guidance of a registered nurse.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION:
1. High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
2. Certification in Basic Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
3. Current certification as a Nursing Assistant in West Virginia or completion of a hospital-based training program is necessary.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
EXPERIENCE:
1. Previous experience in patient care is advantageous.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties outline the essential functions of this position. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
1. Monitor and report any changes in patient condition to the supervising registered nurse promptly.
2. Assist registered nurses with patient admissions, transfers, discharges, and general care tasks.
3. Measure and document vital signs, assist with personal hygiene, and support other comfort measures for patients. Record oral intake and output data.
4. Aid in specimen collection and other patient-related activities as assigned.
5. Contribute to maintaining a clean and safe environment to minimize infection risks and ensure the safety of patients, visitors, and staff.
6. Report any equipment malfunctions to the appropriate personnel following departmental protocols.
7. Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic tests according to established procedures.
8. Communicate any nutritional concerns to the registered nurse, including issues such as poor appetite or confusion regarding dietary changes.
9. Support the department with administrative tasks to enhance operational efficiency.
10. Respond to patient call bells and relay messages to the appropriate staff members.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical requirements for this role include the ability to perform tasks that involve strength and stamina, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The characteristics of the work environment include:
1. Collaborating closely with other healthcare professionals.
2. Working irregular or extended hours as needed.
3. Exposure to biohazards and infectious diseases.
4. Interaction with deceased individuals.
5. Use of hands in water and proximity to electrical hazards associated with patient care equipment.
