Job Summary

As an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with Excela Health, you will provide basic life support and emergency pre-hospital care to individuals in emergency situations. Your primary responsibilities will include providing patient care and transportation, completing timely transports of patients, and operating emergency vehicles.

Essential Job Functions
  • Scheduled to work rotating shifts as needed.
  • Provides BLS patient care in accordance with approved standing orders and protocols, department policies, and online medical command.
  • Acts as a patient advocate and practices good communication techniques to keep patients and families informed regarding their care provision.
  • Completes the appropriate BLS skills lab, CPR, and continuing education credits as required to maintain certification.
  • Completes all required hospital and departmental education and competencies in a timely manner.
  • Operates department vehicle in a safe and lawful manner.
  • Reports to supervisor all traffic violations and other infractions (both on and off the job).
  • Maintains an accident-free record (on the job) during the evaluation period.
  • Responds without delay to emergencies or in a timely manner to calls for assistance or transportation.
  • Coordinates responses with EMS staff, hospital staff, patients, and family and outside agencies so that transportation and care are provided appropriately.
  • Documents patient care on the ambulance trip sheet accurately and legibly in accordance with State and department policies.
  • Collects and legibly documents all required paperwork such as information for patient billing or other record keeping purposes.
  • Inspects assigned vehicle and equipment along with performing other station duties in a timely manner to ensure that equipment and supplies are available and in working order so that proper patient care can be delivered.
  • Reports missing or broken equipment to a supervisor as soon as possible.
  • Washes and disinfects medical equipment and emergency medical vehicles in accordance with appropriate standards.
  • Arranges the scheduling of ambulances and vans in a timely manner as requested and necessary.
  • Reports and documents any concerns, issues, or events which are undesired, or which have the potential to escalate.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, GED, or higher level of education.
  • Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in a healthcare-related field.
  • 5 years' experience in a Pre-Hospital setting.
  • Experience in a Healthcare setting.
License, Certification & Clearances
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License (if out of state hire current Department of Motor Vehicle record report required and obtain PA Current Driver License within 30 days of hire).
  • Completion of Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) (PA Recognized).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program for the Professional Rescuer.
  • Certified by the PA Department of Health as an EMT-B.
  • Act 33 with renewal.
  • Act 34 with renewal.
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal.
Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).

Travel may be expected locally between Independence Health System locations.
