Job Overview

Position Summary: The Metal Fabrication Specialist is tasked with the creation, assembly, and installation of various components for naval vessel repairs and other marine and commercial applications. The components include, but are not limited to, ventilation systems, metal partitions, structural framing, furniture, cabinetry, lockers, ladders, handrails, foundations, and wet areas. As a Metal Fabrication Specialist, you will execute tasks according to detailed technical documentation and procedural guidelines. It is essential for this role to possess trade-specific tools.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Operate sheet metal fabrication machinery and hand tools.
  2. Utilize shearing equipment effectively.
  3. Perform precise fitting tasks on components.
  4. Manage electrical lines and leads.
  5. Demonstrate proficiency in blueprint interpretation.
  6. Provide training to junior sheet metal workers on advanced fabrication techniques.
  7. Adhere to all company safety protocols, ensuring the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) in production areas and promoting a clean and safe working environment.
  8. Ensure that personnel assigned to firewatch duties are prepared before commencing hot work.
  9. Complete Job Safety Analysis (JSA) forms.
Physical Requirements

The Metal Fabrication Specialist must be capable of fulfilling the essential functions of this role. The position is physically demanding and requires extensive standing, walking, sitting, bending, kneeling, stooping, crawling, climbing, and crouching. The individual must be able to lift parts or machinery weighing up to 75 pounds. Additional physical requirements include:

  1. Ability to climb ladders and work from scaffolding.
  2. Capacity to lift, carry, or push weights between 50 and 75 lbs throughout the shift.
Knowledge and Skills
  1. Proficient in reading blueprints.
  2. Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  3. Capable of evaluating resources and making informed decisions regarding safety and company policies.
  4. Skilled in using a tape measure.
  5. Experienced in operating saws, grinders, and various other tools.
  6. Familiar with drills, rivet guns, nibblers, shears, and rollers.
  7. Mid-level proficiency in shipboard installation and shop fabrication layout.
Competencies
  1. Effective communication skills.
  2. Adaptability to job duties and schedule changes.
  3. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from senior personnel.
  4. Strong teamwork orientation.
Work Schedule

This is a full-time position requiring 40 hours per week. The schedule typically runs Monday through Friday, with shifts from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Overtime and weekend work may be necessary based on production demands.

Education and Experience Requirements
  1. A minimum of 4 years of experience in ship repair or a related skill set is required.
  2. Basic proficiency in English is necessary.
