Position Overview

As a key member of our healthcare team, the Lead Registered Nurse is accountable for delivering high-quality patient care through the nursing process, which includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This role involves directing patient education and overseeing the activities of support staff while upholding the standards of professional nursing practice. The Lead Nurse is expected to remain informed about all relevant federal, state, and organizational regulations, policies, and procedures as they evolve.

Qualifications:

  • Entry-level position for recent graduates meeting educational requirements.
  • Preferred experience in specialty units, with at least one year in medical-surgical nursing (e.g., ICU, Maternity, Psychiatry).
Core Competencies:

  • Refer to specific competencies related to the unit and general nursing.
Licensure and Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid New York State license as a registered professional nurse.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required (or to be obtained within the first month of employment).
  • For specialty units, certification in Neonatal Resuscitation must be achieved within six months of employment.
  • For ICU specialty, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is required within six months of hire.
Key Responsibilities:

Employees may be required to perform additional duties as necessary.

Patient Assessment:
  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments and document findings in accordance with nursing and departmental policies.
  • Perform admission assessments and skin risk evaluations accurately and timely.
  • Assess and document pain levels using approved hospital protocols.
Patient Monitoring:
  • Monitor patients' vital signs and overall condition, documenting observations as per established protocols.
  • Identify and report any changes in patient status to the charge nurse or physician.
  • Ensure patient safety by adhering to all relevant safety policies and protocols.
Medication Management:
  • Administer medications, IV fluids, and blood products safely, ensuring accurate documentation.
  • Follow established protocols for medication administration, including the use of electronic systems.
  • Maintain security and accountability for all narcotics and medications.
Patient and Family Education:
  • Identify and address the educational needs of patients and their families regarding their health conditions and treatment plans.
  • Document educational interactions and provide appropriate teaching materials.
Discharge Planning:
  • Initiate and contribute to discharge planning from the point of admission, ensuring all necessary steps are completed.
  • Provide patients with discharge instructions and follow-up care information.
Support for Healthcare Providers:
  • Assist physicians and other healthcare providers during procedures and treatments as required.
  • Communicate critical information effectively using established protocols.
Equipment Proficiency:
  • Demonstrate knowledge and safe usage of medical equipment.
  • Follow hospital policies regarding the use of patient care equipment.
Nursing Skills:
  • Exhibit proficiency in performing nursing procedures and treatments.
  • Conduct regular patient rounds and maintain effective communication with patients and families.
Emergency Preparedness:
  • Participate in emergency preparedness training and drills.
  • Understand and apply emergency response protocols as necessary.
Documentation:
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of all patient care activities in compliance with hospital policies.
Professional Development:
  • Engage in professional nursing activities, including participation in committees and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Attend mandatory training and staff meetings regularly.
Infection Control:
  • Adhere to infection control policies and procedures to ensure patient safety.
Continuity of Care:
  • Facilitate effective communication during patient handoffs to ensure continuity of care.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
