Pediatric Cardiovascular Operating Room Nurse

Job Summary

Deliver exceptional nursing care in the operative setting to patients undergoing surgical or other invasive procedures in the Pediatric Cardiovascular Operating Room at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital.

Responsibilities and Requirements
  • Perform scrub functions, including selecting and handling instruments and supplies used during procedures.
  • Conduct circulating functions, monitoring, recording, and communicating patient condition, and managing overall nursing care before, during, and after procedures.
  • Directly assist operating physicians with surgical tasks, including hemostasis, suturing, and wound exposure, as well as patient positioning.
  • Prepare operating rooms and surgical instruments and equipment for use.
  • Apply evidence-based practice and scientific knowledge in healthcare to nursing practice, ensuring care is delivered based on patient age-specific needs and clinical needs.
  • Meet the professional nursing standards defined in the professional practice model and use the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses to guide responses to evolving health and nursing needs.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or education equivalency for licensing.
  • No experience required.
Physical Requirements
  • Constant use of speech to share information through oral communication.
  • Constant standing and walking.
  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Frequent sitting, reaching, and keyboard use/data entry.
  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Frequent use of smell to detect/recognize odors.
  • Frequent use of hearing to receive oral communication, distinguish body sounds, and/or hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Occasional lifting/moving of patients.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, gripping, and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
  • Occasional driving.
  • Rare crawling and running.
Required Professional Licenses and Certifications
  • Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) - American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Registered Professional Nurse (RN) - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).
