Job Description

The Pediatric Developmental Support Specialist plays a vital role in supporting the psychosocial development of children and adolescents within our healthcare system. This position involves providing developmental play experiences, maintaining safe and therapeutic play spaces, and adapting activities to meet the unique needs of each child and family.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Provide developmental play experiences for children of all ages and abilities under the direction of a Child Life Specialist.
  • Adapt play experiences to meet the individualized needs of the child and family.
  • Create and maintain a therapeutic and safe environment that supports child development, family systems, and diversity.
  • Use critical thinking and past experience to understand and recognize patterns, anticipating the needs of children and families.
  • Maintain play spaces and supplies to support the needs of the space.
  • Communicate and document observations and interventions to the team.
  • Collaborate with patients, families, interdisciplinary teams, and child life team members.
  • Create opportunities for normalcy for children and adolescents.
  • Provide family-centered, developmental education.
  • Represent and communicate child life and psychosocial issues of pediatric healthcare to the interdisciplinary team.
  • Direct child life volunteers and support volunteer programming.
  • Accountable for personal learning and growth through professional activities.
  • Exhibit positive influence on team dynamics through self-reflection and feedback.
  • Communicate effectively with the interdisciplinary team when planning, problem-solving, and evaluating.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills are essential.
  • Minimum of 3 years of direct experience working with children.
  • BLS certification is required.
