The Surgical Technologist 3 plays a vital role in the perioperative phase of patient care, ensuring the smooth execution of surgical procedures under the guidance of a Registered Nurse. This position requires the ability to work effectively with the surgical team to maintain a safe and efficient operating room environment.
Key Responsibilities- Assists the surgical team in preparing the operative site, ensuring aseptic cleaning and patient clipping as needed.
- Prepares and maintains the instrument table(s) in an organized manner, identifying and rectifying any discrepancies to avoid delays or injury.
- Sets up the operating room according to surgical procedure schedules, arranging sterile setup of instrument table supplies and equipment required for specific procedures.
- Scrubs for cases in all major surgical services, demonstrating advanced knowledge of anatomy, surgical instruments, and surgeon preferences.
- Ensures the proper functioning of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies during surgical procedures.
- Performs surgical counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and miscellaneous items, adhering to established policies and procedures.
- Anticipates the needs of the surgical team, passing sterile supplies and equipment to surgeons and assistants during procedures.
- Assists with draping and positioning the patient, receiving surgical specimens following specimen protocol, and passing them off the sterile field to the circulating Nurse.
- Disassembles surgical instrumentation as indicated at the end of the procedure, recycles as necessary, and disposes of sharps, fluids, and waste properly.
- Cleans the operating room following each case, returning equipment to its designated storage area.
- Follows infection control policies, AORN recommendations, OSHA guidelines, and other regulatory requirements to ensure a safe work environment.
- Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program.
- 2 years of experience in a healthcare setting or military service.
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) from NBSTSA or NCCT.
