Job Summary

Birdon America, Inc. is seeking a highly skilled Outfitting Design Lead to join our team. As a key member of our Production Department, you will be responsible for leading the development of outfitting design and drawings for new ship and marine vehicle designs, as well as modifications to existing designs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of junior outfitting designers in the creation of 3D foundation, equipment, joinery, stair, ladder, handrail, and platform models, associated 2D production drawings, and CAM information.
  • Ensure the quality of outfit design models and drawings, incorporating build strategy and design for production.
  • Develop details to assist manufacturing installation and assembly, integrating outfitting design with structure, mechanical, and electrical systems.
  • Write Request for Information for functional engineering missing information and select vendor hardware/parts compatible with systems and customer requirements.
  • Organize and maintain drawing file configurations and storage, processing engineering change notices and corrective actions.
  • Conduct model and drawing reviews with engineer, production, and production control personnel, revising models and drawings to refine products based on input.
  • Create product illustrated parts for Shipconstructor Database equipment entry and assist field engineers in resolving production information requests.
Requirements
  • Associate of Applied Science or equivalent degree.
  • Minimum 10 years of mechanical, structural, or outfitting design experience.
  • 5 years of ShipConstructor software experience, or 3 years of ShipConstructor experience and 2 years with equivalent software.
  • 10 years of AutoCAD software experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in developing 3D outfit models and production drawings.
  • Familiarity with converting files from multiple CAD formats.
  • Working knowledge of joiner systems, stair design, ladder design, handrail design, and platforms, and foundations.
  • Good technical writing and professional communication skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work under limited supervision.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Understanding of scheduling and ability to adhere to strict deadlines.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Steel or aluminum shipbuilding, boat building, offshore, or other marine design or fabrication experience.
  • Fabrication or field engineering experience.
  • Strong knowledge of outfitting standards and design for human system integration, such as experience designing to ASTM 1166.
  • Knowledge of multiple CAD programs and converting STP, IGES files to Autocad files.
  • Knowledge of manholes, tank covers, doors, deck fittings.
  • Knowledge of ABS, US Navy, and USCG design requirements.
  • Familiarity with modular construction methods.

Working Conditions
  • Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment where exposure to dust, fumes, and airborne particles, temperature extremes, and elevated noise levels.
  • Employees must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and frequently lift and/or move more than 50 pounds.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, stoop, kneel, climb, crouch, talk, and hear.
  • Position requires use of computer, telephones, and other office equipment, reading, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening, and hearing ability and visual acuity.
  • Position occasionally requires ability to work in a manufacturing environment and onboard boats and ships from the beginning of production through the sea trials. This includes mobility to work in and around incomplete steel and aluminum hull structures.

Relationships

This role requires a good relationship with the individuals and teams across the Production and Project delivery organizations to ensure Birdon achieves the safe completion of the agreed work, in the time required.

Your communication and direct contact with Birdon clients are an important aspect of this position. It is your responsibility to ensure that Birdon's values and interests are maintained during your relationship with clients, subcontractors, visitors, suppliers, and employees.
