We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Firefighter/EMT to join our team at Botetourt County, VA. As a Firefighter/EMT, you will be responsible for providing emergency medical care and fire suppression services to the community.
Key Responsibilities- Respond to emergency calls and provide medical care and fire suppression services as needed.
- Operate fire apparatus and emergency medical vehicles.
- Enter premises for firefighting, rescue, and salvage operations.
- Administer emergency medical techniques and respond to emergency medical calls.
- Perform hazardous materials mitigation and containment activities.
- Operate and maintain fire and emergency medical equipment.
- Participate in training and professional development activities to maintain certifications and stay up-to-date with industry developments.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Minimum 21 years of age.
- 2 years of BLS field EMS experience preferred.
- Virginia Emergency Medical Technician certification required.
- Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (minimum of class 2) required.
- Virginia Department of Fire Programs Firefighter I or NFPA 1001 equivalent required (must be obtained within 1 year of employment).
- Ability to pass a comprehensive physical examination, including drug, sight, and hearing tests.
- Ability to perform all fire and EMS related physical tasks, including lifting and moving patients, and strenuous physical tasks associated with firefighting.
This position requires the regular use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including a full firefighting ensemble and self-contained breathing apparatus that weighs over 50 pounds. The person in this position will constantly move or traverse uneven terrain, in adverse conditions such as structures under duress of fire, impending collapse, etc. while wearing a full firefighting ensemble.
The ability to wear NFPA compliant self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is required. Each person in this position is required to pass an annual SCBA mask fit test and NFPA 1582 physical.
The employee will regularly work outside in all weather conditions and occasionally work near moving mechanical parts, in high precarious places and confined spaces.
The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electric shock and vibration.
The employee is often exposed to extremely high temperature intensities and sudden temperature changes.
The noise level in the working environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMS activities when noise levels may be loud.
