The nurse is responsible for developing and executing personalized care plans tailored to each patient's unique needs. They provide essential information regarding treatment options and departmental protocols, ensuring patients are well-informed about procedures such as implants and brachytherapy. Additionally, the nurse gathers detailed medical histories and assists in conducting physical examinations, working in tandem with physicists and other healthcare professionals to coordinate departmental activities.

Key Responsibilities:

- Conduct thorough assessments, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans for patients referred for radiation therapy.

- Monitor both the physical and psychological impacts of radiation treatment, responding promptly to any acute changes in patient condition. - Provide telephone consultations for patients experiencing difficulties during their treatment journey. - Perform essential nursing procedures, including suture removal, dressing changes, and IV therapy. - Collaborate with the Radiation Oncologist to manage medication orders and dispensing. - Accurately document and report daily clinical data, including laboratory results and imaging studies, to the physician. - Facilitate hospital admissions and transfers, acting as a liaison between the admitting physician and the radiation oncologist. - Coordinate referrals to subspecialties and university settings as directed by the physician.

- Ensure effective communication and education transfer to patients and their families, maintaining compliance with state and JCAHO regulations regarding radiation safety.

- Participate in scheduled in-services to review policies, procedures, and safety protocols, contributing to the training and development of students within the department.

- Maintain accurate and thorough documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR), adhering to safety and communication standards. - Demonstrate proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications for documentation and scheduling purposes.

- Understand and apply proper billing practices, ensuring accurate charge capture for all procedures performed.

- Address the age-specific needs of the patient population served, as evidenced by observation and documentation.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. - Current State of Michigan Licensure as a Registered Nurse. - BLS-CPR certification required; oncology nursing experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with Lotus Notes. - Previous experience in oncology nursing is preferred. - Strong understanding of nursing techniques, organizational policies, and current trends in the healthcare field. - Excellent communication skills, both in-person and over the phone. - Compliance with mandatory tuberculosis (TB) testing is required.
