Position: Housing Specialist – Tier I

Reports to: Supervising Housing Specialist

Status: Non-Exempt

Division: Housing Services

Location: Queens

Role Summary:

The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in delivering housing assistance to clients, helping them navigate and address personal or societal challenges that impact their housing stability. The Housing Specialist will work in collaboration with case managers and legal personnel to formulate service plans aimed at achieving permanent and stable housing solutions, while also facilitating access to community resources. A key aspect of this role includes cross-training and gaining insights into various functions within the Housing Services Department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage with program participants to create service plans that effectively address and resolve housing-related challenges.
  • Support client intake processes, service planning, advocacy, and referral services when case managers are unavailable.
  • Maintain regular contact with clients, either weekly or bi-weekly, to monitor progress on service plans.
  • Document and track case progress, ensuring accurate data entry into the Legalserver Database.
  • Participate in housing-related activities and workshops to enhance client engagement.
  • Assist clients in obtaining and reinstating necessary benefits.
  • Help clients identify potential financial resources to support their housing needs.
  • Advocate for clients by submitting applications for rental assistance grants through charitable organizations.
  • Compile and submit documentation to HRA for Rental Assistance Grants and One Shot Deals.
  • Coordinate appointments with landlords and housing agents to provide clients with housing options if relocation is necessary.
  • Collaborate with legal services staff to assess client readiness for legal proceedings.
  • Uphold a standard of kindness, respect, and dignity in all interactions with clients, visitors, and colleagues.
  • Enforce facility rules and regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in committees as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all aspects of the role.
  • Demonstrate effective time management and prioritization skills.
  • Stay informed about emerging trends and developments in social services and related fields.
  • Perform general clerical duties as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or a related field with no prior social service experience required.
  • Associate degree in Human Services or a related field with a minimum of 2 years of direct social service experience preferred.
  • High School Diploma/General Equivalent Diploma with at least 4 years of direct social service experience preferred.
  • Understanding of the challenges faced by homeless individuals and special needs populations.
  • Familiarity with casework and case management methodologies.
  • Commitment to the mission of the Neighborhood Association.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
  • Proven capability to manage multiple tasks efficiently under pressure.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and efficiency.
  • Exhibit maturity, integrity, and sound judgment in all professional interactions.
