Position Overview
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a Clinical Animal Behavior Research Associate to deliver expert consultation and support in the field of animal behavior. This role involves contributing to the advancement of research initiatives focused on the behavior, training, and welfare of companion animals.
The selected candidate will be responsible for providing behavior consultation and training services to pet owners, developing innovative research projects that investigate behavioral issues in companion animals, and utilizing technology to enhance intervention strategies and data collection. Additionally, this position will offer educational opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students through classroom instruction and hands-on experiences. Community engagement will be a vital aspect of this role, as the associate will disseminate evidence-based practices and collaborate with veterinarians, animal trainers, and other professionals in the industry.
Candidates must possess a solid foundation in learning theory and behavior analysis as applied to companion animals, along with a comprehensive understanding of applied animal research and current issues in animal behavior and welfare.
Essential Qualifications
- PhD in Animal Behavior, Biology, Psychology, Veterinary Science, or a related discipline;
- Doctoral degree must have been awarded within the last four years, with at least one year of eligibility remaining;
- Proven experience in providing consultation and training services for companion animals and conducting applied research;
- Demonstrated scholarly contributions;
- Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students;
- Strong organizational and teamwork skills;
- Interest in utilizing wearable technologies for physiological data collection.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in conducting research related to companion animal behavior and welfare;
- Familiarity with addressing complex behavioral issues such as fear, anxiety, and aggression;
- Expertise in scientific writing and publication;
- Evidence of effective instructional capabilities with students;
- Experience with wearable technologies and proficiency in grant writing.

Salary range: $53,550-$65,000, commensurate with experience.
