Key Responsibilities
The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for coordinating nursing care, which encompasses direct patient care, patient and family education, and managing transitions of care. The RN upholds professional nursing practices across various settings and throughout the continuum of care to fulfill the needs of patients and their families. Operating within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, the RN is accountable for planning, executing, assessing, and communicating all aspects of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice serves as the foundation for the RN's practice. Leadership is demonstrated through roles such as preceptor, informal leadership, and quality improvement initiatives. Patient care is delegated based on skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal responsibility, and resource availability. The RN must possess strong communication skills, excel in mentoring and teaching, and may participate in committees or projects. Some positions may require the use of a personal vehicle as part of job responsibilities.
Qualifications
Completion of a nursing program is required.
Registered nurses with an associate degree starting after a specified date must provide proof of completion of a baccalaureate degree in nursing within five years from their start date.
Registered nurses with an associate degree starting before that date must provide proof of completion of a baccalaureate degree in nursing as per the requirements in place at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
One year of nursing experience in a relevant care setting or one year of LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is preferred.
Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential. Experience in a collaborative team environment is necessary. Proficiency in computer skills is required, with prior experience in electronic medical record systems being advantageous. Flexibility in working hours, including days, evenings, nights, holidays, weekends, and on-call shifts, is expected. The ability to adapt to unpredictable situations in the workplace is crucial. Demonstrated leadership, effective communication, and strong critical thinking skills are essential.
Licensure and Certification:
A current RN license in accordance with state regulations is required. Maintenance of current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from recognized programs is necessary. Additional state licensure and/or specialty certification may be required based on the work area.
