Job Overview

Summary: Support the educator in overall classroom management; oversee student project groups, and perform various additional tasks as assigned by the educator and/or administration. Non-instructional responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to: aiding in the creation of educational materials, clerical tasks, equipment upkeep, and managing student behavior.


Key Responsibilities: Work is conducted under the general guidance of administration. The individual in this role may be required to undertake any or all of the following (this list does not encompass all tasks that may be expected):

  • Instructional Support
    1. Under the guidance of the Educator, prepares for daily instructional delivery by gathering and/or duplicating materials and arranging necessary equipment.
    2. Enhances initial instruction provided by the Educator to students by assisting those who may struggle with understanding or keeping pace with the presentation.
    3. Augments initial instruction given by the Educator to students by working with individuals or small groups on follow-up tasks as specified by the Educator.
    4. Reiterates initial instruction provided by the Educator to students who were absent during the original presentation.
    5. Assists the Educator in preparing daily instructional activities and setting up the classroom; organizes materials for specialized instructional units.
  • Management and Oversight
  1. Supervises student groups or individuals.
  2. Administers examinations.
  3. Monitors students engaged in desk-based study and learning activities assigned by the Educator.
  4. Maintains and enforces standards of behavior within the Career Center and program. Refers violations of classroom behavior standards to the Educator. Refers violations of Career Center behavior standards to appropriate administrators for disciplinary action.
  5. Collaborates with the Educator on program objectives, requirements, and instructional strategies for students.
  6. Utilizes counseling resources, with the approval of the program Educator, when working with a student to achieve desired behavioral changes.
Record Keeping
  1. Documents grades in record books and/or other record-keeping systems developed by the Educator.
  2. Tracks daily student attendance.
  3. Discusses observed student skills and activities with the Educator in completing competency profiles.
  4. Evaluates daily work and tests developed by the Educator using provided keys and/or standards.
  5. Consults with the Educator regarding supplies and equipment needed for their program.
  6. Monitors students and documents daily receipts and customer invoices.
  7. Prepares handouts and teaching materials and maintains inventory copies.
Safety
  1. Reports accidents, unsafe conditions, or hazards to the Educator and/or administrator.
  2. Adheres to established safety protocols to ensure a secure laboratory/classroom environment.
Maintenance and Repair
  1. Conducts routine housekeeping and minor repairs of equipment.
  2. Assists the Educator in major maintenance of machinery and equipment.
Inventory Management
  1. Collaborates with the Educator to complete inventory tasks.
Additional Responsibilities in Agriscience
  1. Supports the supervision of animal and plant care throughout the year, including weekends and holidays.
  2. Assists in overseeing extracurricular activities related to FFA outside of school hours.
  3. Helps prepare for and supervise various Agriscience events.
Assumes the role of Educator when necessary as directed. Participates in open houses, conferences, and other school-sponsored activities as required. Regular and predictable in-person attendance is essential for this position. Additional related duties may be assigned.

Qualifications: A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required. A minimum of two years (4,000 hours) of relevant paid work experience or training in plant, animal, or both agricultural areas within the last ten years is necessary. Evidence (such as W-2s, employer verification of work experience, etc.) must be included with the application. Previous experience working with youth is preferred. Familiarity with FFA is advantageous.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: A valid Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL) - Group B, (P and S endorsements) is required, or the willingness and ability to obtain the CDL, including passing the CDL physical examination to operate a school bus. A good driving record (no more than 6 points) must be maintained.


Compensation and Benefits: The starting hourly pay range is competitive and placement on the Instructional Assistant salary schedule is based on qualifications and experience.
