Job Title: High Needs Para/Driver

Norfolk Public Schools is seeking a Para/Driver to assist in providing education and instruction to students with high needs.

Job Summary:

The Para/Driver will work under the supervision of the Special Education Teacher to provide support to students with high needs. This includes assisting with individualized study projects, supervising lunchroom, playground, halls, classrooms, and other assigned activities, and preparing bulletin boards, charts, and graphs.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist students with make-up work and individualized study projects
  • Supervise lunchroom, playground, halls, classrooms, and other assigned activities
  • Prepare bulletin boards, charts, and graphs
  • Assist with the physical and health needs of students, such as feeding and toileting
  • Assist with augmentative communication/electronic devices and be willing to be trained for use
  • Check bus before each operation for mechanical defects and notify the proper authorities in the case of mechanical failure
  • Follow guidelines for loading/unloading students
  • Transport only authorized students
  • Obeys all traffic laws; observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses
  • Keeps to assigned schedule
  • Maintains discipline when students are on the bus/van and reports undisciplined students to the proper authority
  • Discharges students only at authorized stops
  • Keeps assigned bus clean
  • Reports all accidents and advises about all possible safety problems
  • Transfers and positions students with physical disabilities
  • Does miscellaneous typing and filing
  • Inventories books, materials, and equipment
  • Assists when emergencies arise
  • Performs other delegated non-instructional responsibilities assigned by teacher or administrator
Requirements:
  • High school diploma
  • First aid/CPR certificate desired
  • Driver's license and good driving record
  • Must pass a DOT physical
Working Conditions:

The Para/Driver will work in a school setting and will be required to drive a school bus/van. The Para/Driver will be expected to maintain a clean and safe environment for students.
