The Legal Advisor for Educational Institutions, under the guidance of the School Division Counsel, plays a crucial role in delivering comprehensive legal support to the School Board, the Superintendent, and school personnel. This position is instrumental in overseeing compliance with federal Title IX regulations and associated state and local policies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the School Division Counsel in conducting legal research and drafting necessary legal documents for the school division's operations.
- Review contracts, legal documents, and provide assistance in litigation and negotiations involving the School Board.
- Advise school personnel on adherence to federal and state laws, as well as local policies and regulations.
- Support the School Division Counsel in providing legal counsel to the School Board and attending relevant meetings.
- Manage Title IX compliance for approximately 14,000 students and 2,400 staff members.
- Oversee adherence to federal Title IX requirements and related regulations.
- Evaluate reports of potential misconduct, determining the applicability of Title IX and gathering necessary information.
- Guide school employees through the Title IX grievance process, providing necessary support and resources.
- Educate all stakeholders about their rights and responsibilities under Title IX.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Title IX regulations and related legal frameworks.
- Consult with legal counsel regarding Title IX compliance and regulations.
- Revise existing policies and procedures to ensure best practices and compliance.
- Ensure a fair and impartial process for all parties involved in Title IX cases.
- Maintain confidentiality throughout all proceedings.
- Supervise Title IX Investigators and oversee informal resolutions.
- Develop a tracking system for Title IX cases and provide regular updates.
- Identify systemic issues related to Title IX compliance.
- Coordinate investigations with external agencies when necessary.
- Enhance the Title IX resources available to the school community.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
A Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school is required, along with a minimum of three years of relevant experience. Candidates must be active members in good standing of the Virginia State Bar or eligible for membership through reciprocity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This role is primarily office-based, requiring regular collaboration with school administrators and staff. Occasional attendance at school-related events may be necessary. Daily interactions with various stakeholders are essential, necessitating strong interpersonal skills and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:
Success in this position will be assessed based on the effectiveness in fulfilling the outlined responsibilities.
