POSITION SUMMARY:
The Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (CTPA) is an integral member of the medical team, providing direct patient care under the supervision of Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons. This essential role within the Open Heart Program involves performing both surgical and non-surgical procedures in the Operating Room and at the bedside in Critical Care Units. The CTPA employs critical thinking skills and adheres to established clinical guidelines while caring for pre- and post-operative patients. Additionally, the CTPA actively engages in quality improvement initiatives and collaborates with various committees as assigned, communicating any patient care or safety concerns to the appropriate leadership.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:- Conducts endoscopic vein harvesting and other surgical procedures as directed by the supervising surgeon.
- Performs comprehensive assessments and develops treatment plans for pre- and post-operative patients in critical care settings.
- Follows medical staff protocols while conducting daily rounds, prescribing therapies, and documenting in patient medical records.
- Collaborates effectively with Medical Staff, Nursing, Pharmacy, and other healthcare professionals.
- Prioritizes patient rounds in coordination with Nursing and supervising physicians.
- Complies with The Joint Commission standards and hospital policies regarding medication reconciliation and aseptic techniques.
- Participates actively in patient care during emergencies, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, as required by the healthcare team.
- Maintains adherence to the Society of Thoracic Surgeons' standards in documentation and prescribing for cardiac surgery patients.
- Exhibits a professional demeanor and approachable communication style with patients, families, and colleagues at all times.
