Position Title: Surgical Technologist

Department: Operating Room

Reports To: Director of Surgical Services

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional preoperative patient care through proficient use of surgical instruments and equipment. This position serves as a scrub assistant to the surgeon during various operative and invasive procedures, working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The Surgical Technologist is expected to utilize their expertise to guide and support other team members.

  • Key Responsibilities


    Facilitates unit operations by acting as a resource specialist for a designated operating room area or specialty service.
  • Maintains a sterile environment throughout all surgical interventions.
  • Exhibits comprehensive knowledge of aseptic techniques and advanced surgical practices, ensuring optimal patient care across diverse scenarios.
  • Confirms the availability and functionality of necessary supplies, instruments, and equipment prior to surgical procedures, adhering to established protocols.
  • Ensures patient safety by following organizational policies and standards of care, managing resources effectively.
  • Encourages professional development by participating in ongoing education and mentoring less experienced staff.
  • Prepares for surgical procedures by scrubbing in, assisting the surgical team, and anticipating the needs of the surgeon.
  • Handles specimens appropriately and ensures all surgical instruments are accounted for post-procedure.
  • Conducts regular checks on equipment and reports any unsafe conditions.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of the operating room and related areas.
  • Assists in patient transport as necessary.
  • May be required to be on-call and work outside of regular hours.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a Surgical Technologist Program and current certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
  • 2-3 years of experience as a surgical technologist with demonstrated competence in multiple surgical specialties.
  • Clinical competency across various specialty areas as required by the facility.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions and communicate effectively.
  • Basic mathematical skills for calculations related to patient care.
  • Competence in utilizing technology and basic computer skills.
  • Current BLS certification.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform tasks requiring visual acuity, hearing, and repetitive motion.
  • Frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.

Work Environment

  • Indoor office setting with adequate lighting and ventilation.
