The Nurse Specialist provides high-quality patient care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This role involves preparing equipment, assisting physicians during examinations and treatments, and administering prescribed medications. The Nurse Specialist also changes dressings, cleans wounds, and monitors patient vital signs. Additionally, they observe and maintain records on patient care, condition, reaction, and progress.
The Nurse Specialist participates as a primary nurse, associate nurse, team member, or team leader in the planning and implementing of patient care. They direct and assist in carrying out safe aseptic technique and procedures. The Nurse Specialist offers leadership and direction to all support staff within the department.
The ICU is a 10-bed, modern unit specializing in the care of critically ill adults and elderly adults. Special procedures include intubations with mechanical ventilator management, arterial lines, TEE, insertion of temporary pacemakers and external pacing, and cardiac drips. The unit monitors as many as 24 telemetry units. The most frequent medical diagnoses seen are Myocardial Infarction, Congestive Heart Failure, Arrhythmias, COPD, Septic Shock, CVA, Overdoses, Hypertensive Crisis, Pneumonia, and DKA. Common surgical conditions are Appendectomy, Exploratory laparotomy, Cholecystectomy (laparoscopic and open procedures), Bowel Resection, Hysterectomy, and Amputation.
Requirements:
Education/Skills
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Able to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care.
- One-year experience in nursing preferred.
- Current Texas State RN License
- CPR (American Heart Association)
- ACLS required within 6 months of hire/transfer date NIHSS required within 90 days of hire/transfer date.
