Job Summary

We are seeking a highly qualified Special Education Teacher to join our team at Suwannee Correctional Institution. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing special education services and teaching assigned academic subjects to students with disabilities in a correctional institution/facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides consultative and direct services to students, teachers, job supervisors, and other staff, as needed, to monitor implementation of the Individualized Education Plan and discusses/devises methods and modifications to meet individual student needs.
  • Conducts Staffing and develops draft Individualized Education Plans for students with disabilities.
  • Conducts IEP meetings to finalize Individualized Education Plans for students with disabilities.
  • Prepares and maintains all documentation related to students with disabilities.
  • Conducts transition planning and makes referrals. This includes liaison and coordination with institutional psychological, medical, and classification staff and may include liaison with other agencies or institutions.
  • Identifies needs for re-evaluation and coordinates re-evaluation assessments with Department personnel.
  • Counsels and advises individuals regarding their progress, behavior, or personal concerns.
  • Provides specialized instruction, assists teachers with providing accommodations and modifications, and regularly monitors student service provision and student progress.
  • Participates in staff meetings, seminars, and workshops to update and enhance skills and to facilitate professional development.
  • Maintains Professional Educator Certification with Exceptional Student Education endorsement to include any required continuing education coursework.
Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university.
  • Possess or be eligible to apply for a State of Florida Educator's Certificate.
  • Support of knowledge, skills, and abilities should be demonstrated on the application, in the education, in the work experience, in the work sample, in the interview and/or during reference checks.

The successful candidate will work in a correctional institution/facility and will be required to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
