Overview:


Under general oversight, this role involves maintaining food service environments, facilities, and equipment in a hygienic and orderly state; preparing main dishes and baking various baked goods; assisting in the routine tasks related to food preparation and serving within a cafeteria setting to support the overall functionality and upkeep of a school cafeteria; and performing related responsibilities as necessary.


Accountable to:
Food Services Supervisor

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepares and cleans food items for cooking.
  • May prepare main dishes, soups, vegetables, sauces, meat entrees, and baked goods such as bread, rolls, and pastries.
  • Aids in the preparation of salads, fruits, and sandwiches.
  • Assists in the baking of cookies, cakes, or bread.
  • Portions, transports, and organizes bulk food items or ingredients.
  • Arranges food and trays for serving.
  • Serves meals to students and staff.
  • Operates various standard kitchen tools and appliances including stoves, dishwashers, mixers, can openers, and slicers.
  • Cleans ovens and kitchen equipment.
  • Washes pots, pans, and kitchen utensils, ensuring cleanliness in all areas.
  • Wipes down tables and maintains cafeteria spaces in a sanitary condition.
  • Lifts heavy containers of food and supplies as needed.
  • May assist in transporting food and supplies from the central kitchen to other locations.
  • Maintains simple records as required.
  • Ensures proper storage and refrigeration of food items and supplies.
  • May serve as a substitute in various routine cafeteria roles.
  • May handle cash transactions for cafeteria sales.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Knowledge:
  • Familiarity with basic methods and materials for food preparation and service.
  • Understanding of food preparation techniques such as washing, cutting, assembling, and wrapping food items.
  • Knowledge of standard liquid and dry measurements.
  • Proficiency with standard kitchen appliances.
  • Awareness of kitchen cleaning materials, methods, and hygienic practices.
  • Knowledge of sanitation and safety protocols related to food preparation, service, and storage.
  • Ability to lift and transport food, ingredients, or equipment.
  • Capability to stand for extended periods.
  • Willingness to learn proper methods for preparing assigned menus.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure and during busy periods.
  • Competence in basic arithmetic operations.
  • Skill in making change accurately and quickly.
  • Adherence to health and sanitation regulations.
  • Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions.
Skills:
  • Demonstrated reliability and dependability.
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships with colleagues.
Experience:

While no formal experience is required, prior involvement in food preparation and kitchen maintenance is preferred, along with a proven record of dependability and cleanliness.


Physical Requirements:

Must possess a valid Food Handler Authorization Card issued by the relevant health authority.
