Position Overview

The Orleans Indigent Defender is actively seeking Junior Legal Counsel who are passionate about advocating for justice and providing exceptional legal representation to clients in need. Our mission focuses on delivering client-centered defense while engaging with the community to foster systemic reform.

We serve a diverse clientele, employing a holistic approach to legal advocacy that prioritizes the unique circumstances of each individual. Our dedicated team comprises attorneys specializing in both adult and juvenile cases, alongside social workers, advocates, investigators, and administrative staff, all committed to ensuring equitable justice for our clients and the broader community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Represent clients in criminal proceedings, ensuring their rights are upheld throughout the legal process.
  • Conduct thorough case investigations, including reviewing police reports and gathering evidence to formulate effective defense strategies.
  • Engage in pre-trial negotiations and represent clients during bench and jury trials.
  • Maintain regular communication with clients, providing updates and guidance on their cases.
  • Prepare and argue legal motions, and conduct all necessary trial actions, including witness examination and evidence presentation.
  • Assist in the development of case strategies and participate in plea negotiations as required.
  • Ensure clients in custody have access to legal counsel at all times.
  • Fulfill additional duties as assigned, including attending relevant meetings and conferences.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Commitment to serving clients from diverse backgrounds and those experiencing poverty.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Familiarity with national standards for criminal defense.
  • Proficiency in legal research and word processing software.
  • Membership in the Louisiana bar is required; candidates willing to take the Louisiana Bar Exam will also be considered.
