Role Responsibilities

A Hematology Oncology Registered Nurse (RN) plays a crucial role in the care of patients dealing with blood disorders and cancer. The responsibilities include:

  • Conducting thorough assessments of patients' health status and vital signs before, during, and after treatment.
  • Administering chemotherapy and other prescribed medications.
  • Monitoring patients for any adverse reactions to treatments.
  • Providing education to patients and their families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, and potential side effects.
  • Collaborating with healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care and management of overall health.
  • Maintaining accurate and detailed patient records.
  • Offering emotional support and counseling to patients and their families.

Hematology Oncology RNs may work in various environments, including cancer centers, hospitals, and clinics. They might also engage in research studies and provide training to other healthcare professionals. A valid nursing license is required, along with experience in oncology and hematology. Certifications such as the Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) or the Certified Hematology Oncology Nurse (CHON) are also beneficial.
