The Model Safety Research team focuses on significantly enhancing our capabilities to implement robust and safe behaviors in AI models. About the Role

OpenAI is in search of a senior researcher who is passionate about AI safety and possesses a solid background in safety research. In this role, you will guide research efforts to facilitate and empower the development of safe AGI, engaging in projects that enhance the safety, alignment, and robustness of our AI systems against adversarial or malicious scenarios. Your contributions will be crucial in defining the future landscape of safe AI systems at OpenAI, significantly impacting our mission to develop and deploy safe AGI.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct cutting-edge research on AI safety topics, including Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), adversarial training, and robustness.
  • Implement innovative methods in OpenAI's core model training and introduce safety enhancements in our products.
  • Establish research directions and strategies to enhance the safety, alignment, and robustness of our AI systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Trust & Safety, legal, policy, and other research divisions, to ensure our products adhere to the highest safety standards.
  • Continuously assess and understand the safety of our models and systems, identifying potential risks and proposing effective mitigation strategies.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm for OpenAI's mission of developing safe, universally beneficial AGI and aligns with OpenAI's charter.
  • Exhibits a strong passion for AI safety and a commitment to making advanced AI models safer for practical applications.
  • Possesses over 4 years of experience in AI safety, particularly in areas such as RLHF, adversarial training, robustness, and fairness & biases.
  • Holds a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in computer science, machine learning, or a related discipline.
  • Has experience in safety initiatives for AI model deployment.
  • Displays a deep understanding of deep learning research and/or possesses strong engineering skills.
  • Thrives in collaborative work environments and values teamwork.
