Job Title: Aquatic Safety Specialist at YMCA of Middle Tennessee

Job Overview:

Compensation: Starting hourly wage based on experience

Position Overview:

In alignment with the Christian mission and vision of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, the Aquatic Safety Specialist will collaborate with fellow team members under the supervision of the Aquatics Director. This role is pivotal in maintaining all aquatic safety measures to create a secure and enjoyable swimming environment.

  • Ensure a safe environment tailored to the needs of all participants
  • Punctually arrive in appropriate attire and at designated positions
  • Inspect for potential hazards upon arrival
  • Guarantee the safety of all members and guests
  • Stay current with American Red Cross lifeguard certification
  • Comply with YMCA of Middle Tennessee Aquatic Safety Standards
  • Enforce facility regulations with courtesy and firmness
  • Maintain cleanliness and readiness of swimming areas
  • Secure premises by locking doors and access points when off-duty
  • Build rapport and engage with members
  • Participate in mandatory staff meetings and training sessions

Qualifications:

A positive demeanor focused on serving members, volunteers, guests, and staff to cultivate a culture of service

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, capable of engaging with diverse community groups

  • Maintain professionalism with conflict resolution skills, sound judgment, and initiative
  • Understand and follow YMCA safety protocols
  • Flexible schedule availability, including evenings and weekends
  • Minimum age requirement of 16 years; prior lifeguarding experience is not necessary
  • Demonstrate swimming proficiency

Required Certifications:

(All necessary training will be provided by the YMCA of Middle Tennessee)

  • Before commencing the first shift: New Hire Orientation training
  • Before commencing the first shift: Complete American Red Cross Lifeguard training and maintain certification

American Red Cross certified lifeguards must adhere to the following standards to retain their certification:

  • Monitor and enforce assigned areas at all times during lifeguard duties
  • Maintain technical rescue skills as outlined in the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Program
  • Stay updated with technical skills in CPR, including adult, child, infant, two-person CPR, AED, and Administering Oxygen

While on duty, the employee may be required to stand, sit, walk on various surfaces, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, or crawl; communicate, taste, or smell. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds may be necessary. Exposure to varying weather conditions and moderate noise levels may also occur.
