Nurse Corps Officer Job Description

As a Nurse Corps Officer in the US Navy, you will have the opportunity to serve your country while advancing your nursing career. Our Nurse Corps Officers provide high-quality nursing care to our nation's heroes and their families, both at home and abroad.

Responsibilities
  • Provide general nursing care to Sailors, Marines, and their families at Navy medical facilities and ships
  • Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement treatment plans
  • Direct and instruct Hospital Corpsmen on how to provide quality patient care
  • Apply leading-edge medical advances at world-class hospitals
  • Utilize advanced technology, such as RFID, to improve patient care
  • Assist with global relief efforts, including distributing vaccines and providing emergency care
Work Environment

Nurse Corps Officers may serve at any of our over 250 Navy and medical facilities around the globe, from Hawaii to Japan, Germany to Guam, and Washington, D.C. to Washington state. You may work at one of our highly acclaimed National Naval Medical Centers or provide medical support aboard one of our two dedicated hospital ships.

Training & Advancement

Upon commissioning, new Nurses attend Officer Development School (ODS) in Newport, RI. ODS is a five-week program designed to introduce you to Navy culture. Promotion opportunities are regularly available, but competitive and based on performance.

Specialization Opportunities

The Navy provides Nurse Corps Officers the opportunity to specialize based on manning needs. Specialization fields include:

  • Nurse Anesthetists
  • Primary Care Nurse Practitioners
  • Medical-Surgical Nurses
  • Perioperative Nurses
  • Critical Care Nurses
  • Mental Health Nurses and Nurse Practitioners
  • Military-specific Specializations
Education Opportunities

The Navy offers generous financial assistance and continuing education programs to help ease your financial burdens and advance your career. Available offers include scholarships, sign-on bonuses, and loan repayment assistance.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • U.S. Citizen between the ages of 18 and 41
  • Currently licensed and practicing nursing in the U.S.
  • In good standing with a CCNE-accredited U.S. education program granting a Bachelor of Science degree
  • Willing to serve a minimum of three years Active Duty
  • In good physical condition and able to pass a full medical examination
