Assess and manage the credit risks associated with larger, more intricate commercial clients through comprehensive financial analysis, industry evaluation, collateral assessment, cash flow scrutiny, and repayment capability analysis.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the credit requirements of clients by underwriting new applications and significant modifications from initial review to approval and throughout the loan duration.
- Oversee the ongoing credit risk of current loan portfolios via continuous credit monitoring (CCM) practices, enabling the prompt identification of emerging risks to take necessary actions, minimize losses, and assign accurate risk ratings. A CCM program includes but is not limited to annual reviews, interim updates, covenant monitoring, problem loan management, early warning indicators, and various forms of credit oversight.
- Examine all relevant credit and financial data, including but not limited to financial statements, tax documents, due diligence reports, credit reports, appraisals, internal credit data, industry analysis, and peer benchmarks. Assess the need for further investigation or additional information and coordinate the collection of such data.
- Evaluate financial information and related documents, completing credit analyses for the Bank's commercial transactions. Written evaluations should include an independent credit quality assessment with well-supported risk ratings, identification and description of credit risks and mitigants, industry issues, market trends, financial trends, and other relevant credit matters.
- Collaborate proactively with relationship managers, being actively involved throughout the deal process, from initial review to approval and throughout the loan's life to maintain timely and precise risk ratings for a portfolio of commercial credits.
- Analyze financial statements and create financial models to evaluate various conditions affecting the proposed transaction. Prepare cash flow projections, collateral schedules, covenant sensitivity analyses, financial models, and guarantor statement evaluations as necessary.
- Participate in client/prospect meetings with relationship managers to gain a comprehensive understanding of the client/prospect and their business to effectively analyze and underwrite the proposed transaction. Based on underwriting criteria, recommend the appropriate risk rating.
- Prepare summaries, present facts, and provide insights regarding creditworthiness.
- Assist in structuring loan requests, when appropriate, including recommendations on terms, conditions, controls, collateral, and guarantors.
- Exhibit a thorough understanding of the financial regulatory landscape as it pertains to underwriting various forms of commercial credit transactions.
- Ensure compliance with credit policies by verifying adherence to the Commercial Credit Policy and evaluating any risks associated with non-compliance.
- Present analyses or address inquiries during credit request discussions or committee presentations.
- Adhere to applicable compliance and operational risk controls in accordance with company or regulatory standards and policies.
- Foster an environment that promotes diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
- Maintain internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points along with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
- Complete other related duties as assigned.
The Commercial Credit Underwriting/Portfolio Management Department is tasked with providing an independent credit quality assessment of the Bank's commercial clients. These assessments range from initial evaluations of new relationships to significant modifications or restructurings of long-term relationships and ongoing monitoring throughout the loan's life. The Department is also responsible for ensuring the accurate completion of the Bank's risk rating scorecards and financial statement analyses. The work performed in this role is utilized to make new credit decisions.
This position interacts with commercial banking relationship managers across the bank's operations as well as other internal personnel on credit approvals typically exceeding $30 million.
Works independently with limited supervision.
Client interaction is expected.
Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities:
Contribute to the training of junior or newly hired underwriters.
Education and Experience Required:
A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field and a minimum of 5 years of experience in commercial credit, public accounting, financial statement preparation/analysis, or other financial analysis. Alternatively, a combined minimum of 9 years of higher education and work experience, including 5 years of experience in commercial credit, public accounting, financial statement preparation/analysis, or other financial analysis.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
Strong analytical capabilities.
M&T Bank is dedicated to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation for our employees. The pay range for this position is $103,000 to $173,044.05 annually (USD). The successful candidate's specific combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will determine their exact compensation.
