Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Advanced Practice Provider to join our team at the Cardiovascular Institute. As a critical care specialist, you will work in the intensive care unit managing cardiac surgery patients, including pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care.

Responsibilities:

Obtain and record detailed medical histories and perform complete physical examinations
Prepare initial patient orders for admission, pre-and post-operative care, including diet, fluids, activity, laboratory studies, diagnostic imaging, and medications
Intra-operative second assisting as needed
Write operative procedure notes and assist in transport of patients from the operating room to the intensive care unit
Insert and remove chest tubes/pigtail catheters, remove temporary epicardial pacing wires, remove sutures and staples, perform arterial punctures for arterial blood gas specimens, perform thoracentesis, insert nasogastric tubes, peripheral IV lines, central venous lines, arterial lines, catheterize the bladder, clean, debride, dress wounds, apply wound VAC dressings
May perform other duties as requested by staff physicians or attending physicians, including care of selected patients on both the medical and surgical services and initiating consultative services on behalf of the CVT surgery service

Requirements:

Graduate of an accredited PA program with current NCCPA certification or graduate of a Nurse Practitioner program and certified by the ANCC or by the AANP
Hold or be eligible for licensure in the state of Rhode Island as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner, eligible for licensure for Federal DEA certificate
Completed approved BLS/ACLS courses within 2 years

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

This position includes days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays providing comprehensive patient care in the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative setting with primary focus being in the intensive care unit. The ideal candidate will have some critical care management experience, preferably in cardiac surgery, but highly qualified new graduates will be considered. Three to six months on-the-job training and experience to become familiar with job responsibilities and work routines will be required. All applicants should possess a high level of ability to function with significant clinical autonomy.
