Groundman - Underground (Duke)

The Underground Groundman is an entry-level position in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. This role involves working at various locations and may require travel to other states based on customer demands.

• Perform new construction, maintenance, or repair work on energized and de-energized underground systems while ensuring safety.
• Set pad mount transformers.
• Work around high-voltage systems, requiring skill and care to protect oneself and others.
• Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order.
• Perform rigorous physical labor.
• Understand and use company radio properly.
• Understand basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying.
• Understand the proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
• Receive and follow directions.
• Have a basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
• Identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
• Familiarize oneself with induced voltage.
• Assist with the installation and hook-up of a single-phase transformer.
• Perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
• Understand equipment setup and grounding basics.
• Work at heights and/or confined spaces.
• Understand minimum approach distance.
• Understand excavation and shoring requirements.
• Check voltage on transformers.
• Install and remove services.
• Inspect rubber goods and PPE properly.
• Know when to wear personnel protective equipment.
• Climb different structures (wood, steel) and possess necessary tools.
• Work in underground trenches and manholes.
• Understand Kellum grip usage.
• Identify different materials used in line work.
• Work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
• Will to work live high-voltage distribution lines.
• Perform all other related work to complete the job.

• No experience necessary.
• Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
• Able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License permit within 60 days of employment.
• A Commercial Driver's License is preferred.
• Ability to travel long distances on short notice, when required.
• Ability to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
• Ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
• Ability to inspect rubber goods and PPE properly.
• Will to work overtime when requested.

The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
