POSITION SUMMARY
The Financial Planning Analyst will deliver budgeting and analytical assistance to Southern Company Services (SCS) divisions and Southern Company affiliates. This role is essential for ensuring the precise and timely examination of financial transactions and their reporting to various management levels. The analyst will oversee the collection and analysis of periodic cost forecasts for the organization and the projects they support, providing strategic counsel and planning insights to management as required. This position is also responsible for fostering effective relationships and communication within SCS Budgeting and Reporting and with our stakeholders.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Formulate and convey budgets and financial reports for SCS Departments and Major Projects.
- Analyze data and effectively communicate the financial status of SCS Business Units.
- Facilitate the annual budget preparation and communication processes.
- Prepare and disseminate monthly variance reports along with comprehensive analyses of budget, actual, and projection data.
- Advise managers on GAAP and Southern Company accounting standards.
- Ensure adherence to internal controls and propose necessary modifications and efficiency enhancements.
- Provide accounting policy guidance to non-financial managers.
- Consolidate reporting for management oversight of both SCS Departments and Major Projects.
- Collect and analyze periodic cost forecasts and budget data.
- Engage in special projects by gathering relevant information and providing analysis.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships and communication with business unit and project managers.
- Demonstrate strong organizational skills.
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
- Preferred qualifications include CPA, CMA, or an MBA/other advanced degree.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration is required.
- Utility accounting experience is preferred.
- Experience in accounting, cost management, and reporting is essential.
- Familiarity with Oracle Cloud ERP, OACS, Oracle Planning, and PowerPlan is preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products (Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) is highly desired.
- Experience in capital and O&M budgeting is advantageous.
- Project cost tracking experience is a plus.
- Experience in coordinating requests from multiple business units to meet goals and objectives is beneficial.
- Detail-oriented with strong initiative, critical thinking skills, and excellent follow-through.
- Proficient analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Demonstrated organizational and planning capabilities.
- Knowledge of utility and regulatory accounting standards and GAAP principles is desirable.
- Understanding of data management and retrieval techniques with strong technical skills.
- Ability to conceptualize and quickly grasp our Accounting System, POET Codes, and report on cost drivers.
- Capacity to multitask and adapt to a dynamic environment.
- Aptitude for coordinating activities among multiple individuals to achieve a unified deliverable.
- Ability to synthesize disparate information into a cohesive and concise report.
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective interaction with accounting, auditing, and various non-financial functional areas, as well as staff and management at different levels.
- Ability to function within a matrix organization and communicate effectively with personnel at various levels, including upper management.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated personal ownership and initiative.
- Ability to anticipate and proactively communicate financial implications of business unit decisions.
- Sound business judgment in decision-making.

- Familiarity with Enterprise Foundations principles is preferred.
- Understanding various perspectives of SCS data and the ability to communicate appropriately to diverse audiences.
- Thorough understanding of techniques and methods for accounting, budgeting, cost tracking, financial projections, and their interrelationships with affiliate accounting and budgeting functions.
