Position Overview:

The Emergency Services Technician (EST), under the supervision of the nursing staff, executes fundamental life support procedures (airway management, respiration, and circulation) for patients in the emergency department seeking medical attention. The EST initiates critical interventions, such as securing an airway, controlling bleeding, performing chest compressions, and ensuring proper alignment and protection of the cervical spine.

The EST is responsible for stabilizing and safely removing injured individuals from vehicles at the emergency department entrance, assisting patients in transitioning to and from vehicles and the emergency area, and serving as a communication link between the patient’s family/significant others and the emergency care team by providing updates on patient status, changes in condition, and addressing any concerns.

The technician transports patients from the triage or waiting area to the treatment zone in the emergency department as directed by the nursing staff. Furthermore, the EST will conduct EKGs and monitor vital signs according to established protocols and under the guidance of the nurse; assist patients with their care needs; respond to inquiries; aid in the labeling of specimens, ensuring proper handling; and perform hourly rounds to assess needs, comfort, and pain levels.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma is mandatory.
  • Eligibility as an Emergency Services Technician through one of the following methods is required:
    • Current South Carolina State Nursing Assistant Certification (CNA) or;
    • A minimum of one year of experience as a Medical Secretary or in a clinical setting or;
    • Successful completion of a Medical Assistant program or;
    • Phlebotomy training and certification or;
    • Completion of a Dysrhythmia course with certification or;
    • EMT or Paramedic Certification or;
    • Acceptance into an accredited nursing program with enrollment in the first semester coursework or;
    • Completion of a second-year pre-med curriculum track or;
    • A minimum of one year of direct patient care experience (e.g., home care, hospice, nursing home, etc.).
  • Current CMC Technicians hired before the specified date are exempt from the above requirements based on on-the-job training.

Licensure/Certification/Registration:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification must be acquired within 90 days of employment.

Special Skills:

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with nursing personnel, physicians, departmental leadership, and other members of the patient care team across various departments.
  • Exceptional core customer service attributes, including Excellence, Compassion, Healing, Teamwork, Stewardship, Innovation, and Integrity, are essential.
  • Strong organizational abilities are required.
  • Proficient computer skills are necessary.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills are required.
