Position Overview: The skilled Nurse in the Medical/Surgical or Telemetry clinical environment operates autonomously while maintaining an understanding of all pertinent aspects of patient care.

Key Responsibilities: Provides both routine and complex nursing care in alignment with established patient treatment protocols. Continues to enhance skills in managing clinical contingencies effectively. Appropriately assigns tasks and delegates responsibilities to other healthcare providers to ensure optimal patient management.

Facility Information: CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - New Braunfels (CSRH-NB) is a comprehensive healthcare facility featuring 94 private beds, dedicated to adapting to the growing healthcare needs of the community.

Advanced Services: The hospital employs state-of-the-art equipment and innovative procedures, including an Outpatient Imaging Center, orthopedic and surgical services, rehabilitation, a modernized birthing center with 24/7 neonatal support, emergency services, wound care/hyperbaric therapy, 3D mammography, and extensive cardiac care, from diagnostics to open-heart surgery.

Essential Duties:

  • In accordance with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, delivers nursing care through the nursing process, encompassing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation for assigned patients.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of patient history, symptoms, medications, and care administered.
  • Evaluates educational needs and provides instruction to patients, family members, and caregivers.
  • Utilizes critical thinking to assess the physical, psychosocial, social, cultural, spiritual, and developmental needs of patients and their families.
  • Effectively communicates findings to relevant healthcare team members.
  • Develops and implements individualized care plans based on evidence-based practices.
  • Administers patient care and therapeutic interventions; monitors and documents the progress of treatment and educational objectives.
  • Assesses the effectiveness of care and the patient's response to treatments.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in unit-specific competencies based on the needs of the designated patient population.

Unit Operations:

  • Plans, directs, and evaluates the overall nursing care and operations within a specific nursing unit during assigned shifts.
  • Exhibits responsible stewardship in the utilization and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  • Provides education and training to others regarding operational, ethical, and regulatory standards within the healthcare industry.

Quality Care and Compliance:

  • Demonstrates accountability for nursing research and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Delivers evidence-based nursing care.
  • Effectively communicates patient information throughout the continuum of care.
  • Possesses knowledge of federal, state, and local healthcare laws and regulations, ensuring compliance in all healthcare practices.

Clinical Standards:

  • Analyzes policies and standards documentation to ensure organizational adherence.
  • Assists in the formulation and execution of specific procedural guidelines.
  • Engages with control and monitoring mechanisms, tools, and techniques.

Health Information Management:

  • Describes the flow of information between various departments or units.
  • Discusses the functionalities and document flow of electronic health records.
  • Explains best practices in health information documentation and their rationale across healthcare settings.

Medical Equipment Proficiency:

  • Describes experience with essential medical equipment utilized in the unit.
  • Employs standard diagnostic tools and techniques to troubleshoot common equipment issues.
  • Educates patients on the appropriate use of home medical devices.
  • Ensures all equipment and supplies are in proper working condition prior to use to guarantee patient safety.
  • Conducts inspections, troubleshooting, and evaluations of incoming medical equipment.

Medical Order Management:

  • Shares experiences related to processing medical orders for various patient groups or conditions.
  • Describes the functions and features of the systems used for entering, validating, updating, and forwarding medical orders.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in reading and interpreting patient charts for individuals under care.
  • Recognizes unexpected readings and promptly alerts nursing or medical staff.
  • Utilizes appropriate systems to document incidents and participates in immediate investigations and reporting.

Qualifications: A Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing is preferred. A minimum of 2 years of combined experience in Medical/Surgical and Telemetry nursing is required. Relevant certifications and training must be completed within the specified timeframe upon hire.
